Diet

Sugary treats are the foods and drinks you probably think of first when considering what’s bad for your teeth. However, there are a range of other foods and drinks which can lead to health problems for your mouth. Carbonated soft drinks – even if they are “diet” or sugar free – can cause damage to the enamel on your teeth, as can strongly acidic foods such as grapefruits and pickled onions. You should therefore avoid consuming these foods and drinks as much as you can.

Fluoride use

It is recommended that both adults and children brush their teeth using toothpaste that contains fluoride. Most toothpaste available in grocery stores and supermarkets will include fluoride, but there are some fluoride-free versions available so check if you are unsure. If you are especially prone to tooth decay, then toothpaste, mouthwash, gels or tablets with a higher concentration of fluoride can be purchased. Always speak to a dentist or hygienist before using any of these products.

Fissure sealants

Tooth decay is most often caused by food and bacteria becoming lodged in the tiny grooves in your teeth. To protect your mouth from the pain and damage of tooth decay, fissure sealants can be applied to your back teeth. The sealant is a resin-based plastic coating that defends your teeth against food and bacteria. The process is quick and painless, and your teeth will feel no different afterwards.

Effective brushing

It may sound obvious, but ensuring you are brushing your teeth effectively can make a considerable difference to the health of your mouth. You should ensure you are brushing twice a day – once before you go to bed, and once at any other time of the day – and each brushing session should last around two minutes. Whilst some patients find an electric toothbrush gives a more thorough clean, you can achieve the same results with a manual brush.

During brushing, you should ensure you clean all surfaces of all your teeth. Whilst not essential, you may also want to brush your tongue, as this will help to prevent bacteria build-up and bad breath. Spit out excess toothpaste after you brush, but don’t rinse with water. You should also regularly use floss or interdental brushes to remove plaque from along your gum line. Your Glasgow dentist or dental hygienist will be able to advise you on flossing techniques if you are unsure.
